A sponsored notice ("sponsored" was in super tiny letters at the top of the notice) was sent via LinkedIn inviting me to apply for inclusion in the 2023 edition of Who's Who in America. I selected the "Yes, I want to apply!" option and a few days later I received an email invitation for an interview. I provided my phone number and the time I would be available for this interview. The person sounded legit enough on the phone and when it came to the money part; the woman representing Who's Who offered no explanation as to why I was required to pay (in the invitation I received from LinkedIn it was even stated that there is no cost or obligation to be in a Who's Who directory). For some reason, I gave her my debit card info, and after that the conversation was over. I felt as though I wasn't given an opportunity to ask why I was supposed to give out my debit info. I've tried to reach out via email and I haven't heard back from her. I wish I had noticed the tiny "sponsored" word in the initial notice. I never respond to sponsored web ads. I was charged $506 to be in the 2023 Who's Who in America, which I'm certain I'll be listed under the Dumbest of the Dumb in America.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I was not sure at first, but based on listing programs I have been familiar with working in a similar way, it definitely raised some red flags. In doing some searching it is pretty clearly a scam, but normally it is obvious from the sender email. Since it came through LinkedIn, I can see how it was easy for them to disguise that and make it seem legit. What you described is right on par with how I imagine they would try to scam somebody. Sorry you got hustled, but thanks for sharing.
