I received an email from “Kent Johnson”: the Human Resource manager at Westlake Chemical Corporation. He told me that he is “seeking an innovative and dedicated Graphic Designer to work via a Remote base that can work either per-time or full-time” and that he saw my profile on Indeed and was impressed by my experience. He claimed to have reviewed my resume and told me that I am what they are looking for. He then shared his Skype ID with me so that we could schedule an interview. Long story short, we had it but it was completely executed through sending text messages to each other on the application, not through live video. I thought this was odd. He sent me the company overview, job brief, responsibilities, requirements for the job, and told me to text back “OKAY” or “YES” after finishing with reading each bubble that he sent me. He then asked me a series of questions that are expected on an interview (e.g. my biggest challenge at my current job and how I overcame it). After completing them, he told me that he loved how “on the head” each of my responses were. The red flag was really set when he then asked me what bank I use, and whether I would prefer to be paid weekly or biweekly. He then messaged me to report back to him on Monday at 8:15 AM sharp (the interview was conducted on a Friday). He messaged me, in poor English (so I could tell this was a different person than the one who messaged me on Friday) that he was impressed by my profile and that I got the job. I then asked him what is the name of the department I’ll be working for and who is my manager. He told me I will be reporting to the art Director and also my department supervisor “Mr. Cole Hudson” through a webinar once my working ID is made available. I then told him before I accept the position, I must have an interview with the art Director and Mr. Hudson. Kent then told me I won’t undergo another round of interviews with the department. I am “offered an entry-level discipline and typically that position does not require prior experience in the field or profession”. I once again asked what department I’m working for and when do I speak in person to my supervisors also, I asked him when I get my hiring papers. I then informed him that I cannot accept the position without first viewing the contract and signing it. He then told me I will receive my duties every day via email and my supervisor will be “attached to me online” to assist me with any difficulties. I will be receiving my offer of employment letter via email. He then asked me my email address. I told him it was on the résumé. Finally, I asked him can I video chat with him to verify that he is in fact Kent. I then informed him that I was scammed before. at first, He ignored this request. Instead of saying yes or no, he then told me I will earn $40 an hour during full working hours and $25 an hour during training sessions. He told me I will undergo one week of paid training from my supervisor and that it will be done through seminars online on my PC and phone. Once again, I asked him if I could video chat with him for five minutes. He signed off Skype and never responded again. While I did find a Kent Johnson on LinkedIn with the profile mentioning HR representative at Westlake Chemical Corporation, there was no image of him used for a profile picture. Also, there was no mentioning of any graphic designer jobs available for Westlake Chemical Corporation on its website or on Indeed. I took note of this fact before going through with the first interview with Kent.
