Weber Shandwick Reports & Reviews (1)

- Burke, VA, USA

I have been applying for jobs through a ZipRecruiter account. Back in December 2017, I applied for a Graphic Design-Contract position with the corporation known as Weber Shandwick and then as late as 18 June 2018, I received an email from their alleged job recruiter, named Mrs. Jean Lee Swagert, saying that I could contact her via Google Chat for an online interview.

This, recruiter, said she was from their Human Resources although I later learned that, in fact, she -- and others working with her were using the real names of officers from the Weber Shandwick Corporation as part of their a “front.”

In any event, I talked to the alleged Mrs. Jean Lee Swagert via Google Chat who informed me that she had already spoken with their “hiring managers” and had come back to tell me that I had been hired on the spot for the position, even without a face-to-face or phone interview.

I chatted with the “recruiter” for three days after that over Google Chat, about the steps going forward to acquiring the position. She informed me the position was a work-from-home job, with paid online training and I that would receive a check bi-weekly via wire transfer, direct deposit or check. I would also receive a check to help pay for the set-up of my "work from home office." (I later learned that the equipment was worth about $ 6,000 and that it would be purchased in my name.)

The check, the alleged recruiter said, would be used to set up my “mini office” and if I was still working for them after three months, all the materials purchased would belong to me. All the materials would also be purchased through an “accredited vendor.” I was also given the name of my future “supervisor.”

Now, when I received another email from their alleged recruiter, she then said that due to an error in their system, the employee must purchase the materials. Soon after, she sent me the check to be deposited, in the amount of $6,120.00 and also requested that I scan my deposit slip. I went to the bank twice, but on both occasions, the deposit slip was denied.

Thankfully, it turns out, my bank had recently updated their deposit system to detect “fake checks.” Then, when I texted back and forth with the alleged recruiter, I started to poke holes into why the check would not be accepted and I even tried to video chat with her, which was, of course, denied. But the alleged recruiter kept on insisting that the check must be deposited, but I then lost contact with her altogether. Therefore, in the end, I did not lose any money and fully realized this was a scam and that I “fell” for it because I had really wanted to believe the job was for real since I had been applying for positions for several months. Also, I learned my lesson that this “deal” was “too good to be true,” and from now on will be wiser, and will be very wary if it is not a “real” and extensive interview by phone, but preferably in person.

The scammer also used at least three different email addresses, all of them not the real Weber Shandwick, of course, and they are as follows:

[email protected], [email protected], [email protected]
