I was selling my clothes and shoes via Depop which is an app where people sell and buy used clothes. I have sold few of my items and bought few items there and never had a problem before. The incident happened when I was selling my prom dress. She commented on the dress saying she is interested in buying and would like me to contact me through e-mail. So, I e-mailed her to the e-amil address (provided above) and we were arranging shipping and exchanged phone numbers (provided above). I listed the dress for 40 dollars, but she said she was going to add $30 for holding the dress. Additionally, she said she would like to send me a check for $980 because she wanted me to ship the item to her "personal mover" who will deliver the item to her hands. As I'm writing this report, now I see how fishy it is, but at the time I thought it made sense for some reason. So the check arrived in the mail through USPS. However, something I noticed was that the check was from a bank in Alabama, and it didn't enlist her names anywhere. She texted me immediately when the check arrived and rushed me to deposit the check. So, I online deposited the check and waited to pend so that I could send the rest of the money (about $900) to her "personal mover" whose venmo account was at [email protected]. I told my dad about the incident and he found it extremely fishy, so I started to do research on scam/fraud and this was one of the scam methods. So, it's like they send you a check that is way over what you asked for and ask you to refund the rest of the money. However, the check is fake and it will return to you meaning when you send the money it will only take it from account. In my case, I found out before I sent the person the money (thank god) and after I blocked her and reported the fake check to my bank.
