The scammers identified themselves as Verizon Wireless Fraud Prevention and indicated that due to a purchase initiated in MT (not my state) the account needed to be closed and a new account opened.

I said I’d hang up and call them back - they answered the phone. Next I said I’d call Verizon main number myself - while I was going thru the Verizon voicemail options the scammers deactivated (SOS mode) the phone I was calling on.

When I called the scammers back on a different phone they were able to turn my other phone back on.

This made me think they were actually Verizon. They had my actual Verizon account number as well.

They indicated I needed to repay my previous month’s bill and then enter a code to get a refund of that payment.

Each time the “refund process” instructions they gave did not work and I kept sending them more and more actual cash. Finally I reached my transfer limit, they asked me to use a different bank account, I told them I don’t have one and they hung up on me.

When I contacted actual Verizon tech support they said it’s probably an inside job of some kind since they had the account number and could disable my phone. The tech rep “added extra security” to my account. The Verizon security seems to be very lax to allow this exploitation and I will be switching carriers asap.
