I was almost the victim of a port-out scam to take control of my cell phone and allow scammers to receive two-factor authorization messages for my other accounts. A man called me on 6/25/18 at 10:57 AM from (800) 922-0204 on a line with relatively poor sound quality where several background conversations could be heard, as though from a call center with insufficient sound insulation between customer service representatives. He was friendly and relatively well spoken. He told me he was calling from Verizon Wireless, apologized for the recent difficulties I had experienced with dropped calls and poor call quality, and told me that they were attempting to improve call quality by transferring customers to their new 4.5G platform. He asked me a few survey questions, such as: had I experienced spotty or dropped calls, had I experienced problems with data and surfing the internet, and on a scale of 1 to 10, how would I rate Verizon Wireless. He told me he'd have to place me on a brief hold, and the call was silent for perhaps 30 seconds. I then received the text message pictured below, and the caller asked me to provide the confirmation code which had been sent via text. During the time when the line was silent, however, I had Googled the number the call had originated from, 800-922-0204. The call didn't feel quite right, and I wanted to confirm whether it was truly a Verizon Wireless number. Fortunately, a few articles about scams showed near the top of the Google search results. I told the caller that I would call back, then called Verizon Wireless to ask about the call. They of course confirmed that the call was a scam, but by then I had already read an NBC news article from 3/27/18 discussing this type of scam and was clear on what had happened.

My own phone number called me to let me know that I had won $105 from Verizon Wireless and that I should go to www.vz105.com to claim my money. I went to the website and couldn't click on anything except for the submit button. It looked like the verizon wireless website, but it wasn't. They wanted my cell phone number, my password, and the answer to my security question. I looked around on the website for about 30 seconds and clicked on various parts of the website and nothing connected. I closed the website and came directly here to help others that could be scammed.

Text from 408-329-9888 "Mandatory account update from Verizon Wireless". Asked for personally identifiable information, including SS number, driver's license, credit card number(s), etc.
