Venmo, Ryan Kartune Reports & Reviews (1)

- Aurora, OH, USA

On Wed 2017-03-15, I found on Facebook and made an offer to buy a used Dell Inspiron (sp as in the ad) Laptop from "Ryan Kartune." The purchase was for a person I know who is poor, needs a laptop, and cannot afford to buy it. The price named in the ad was $230. In the process of our online conversation, the person disclosed the information that s/he was a KSU student who studied Russian. I teach Russian at KSU. Ryan Kartune named the names of two other professors at my Department who teach Russian. So I fully trusted the person and thought I was helping out a student. Further, in our online conversation, which I have documented, Ryan Kartune suggested I pay him/her via an app called "Venmo" (https://venmo.com/) and that it charges no fees to me. I trusted the person and downloaded the app. I paid my $230 through it. Ryan Kartune's information about the fees was wrong--I had to pay 3% for using my credit card to pay him/her via Venmo. Ryan Kartune shipped me the laptop. But then, s/he requested $70 more though Venmo with no explanation. When I asked why, Ryan Kartune answered that it was for the data transfer services that s/he did not anticipate. I said that it is not how business is done. But because s/he claimed to be a poor student, I agreed, out of the kindness of my heart, to pay him/her $50 more. I was hoping the story ended, and I could give that laptop to that poor person I got it for. But today (2017-03-20), I received ANOTHER request from Ryan Kartune through Venmo for $25. I refused to pay and deleted the Venmo app. I notified Ryan Kartune of it (the conversation is copy-pasted into a document and saved by me for future disputes). I am a single mom and am not being able to live debt-free. I suggested Ryan Kartune pick up his/her laptop from me at KSU and gives me back $280, so that s/he could sell it for the price s/he wants. I said I will not charge him/her for the interest fees of Venmo. Ryan Kartune proceeded saying that there are NO FEES because s/he is the CREATOR of the Venmo app. I then questioned the whole situation, since the creator perhaps should know about such fees....... So I said that I thought s/he was a conman. I said I would report it to BBB and call my credit card company to report my card compromised, since it all has been VERY phishy. Ryan Kartune then threatened to report me to the dean because I am "nuts" to think that s/he has my or other people's credit card numbers. .... Ryan Kartune avoided answering my questions directly (such as, when I asked him/her if he/her realized that I will NOT have the laptop in my hands tomorrow since it was meant for that poor person (whose birthday is also coming up, so this whole thing caused me a lot of stress on all fronts; but I admit that it is my fault for falling for it). And--I am happy to be reported to the dean. But I WILL stand up for bullying and lies. I do not want for anyone else to fall for this masterfully orchestrated scam. So I am reporting both "Ryan Kartune" (which I think is a false name) and VENMO to BBB as potential scams.
