Apparently the scammer hacked my friend’s Facebook Messenger because he initiated a conversation following a previous thread where I had communicated with my friend a day or two ago. He said he was excited about money he had received and he had seen my name on the list when his money arrived via FedEx! Many clues that it wasn’t real, but I played along to see what the scam was. He gave me a number to text. I didn’t text the number, so they didn’t have opportunity to try to get money from me. I’m sure they would have asked for personal info if I had text the number.
