Trojan/Clampi Virus Scam Reports & Reviews (1)

- Hagerstown, MD, USA

This was a 2 part scam. It started with my computer locking up & coming up with a msg, saying virus detected, call Microsoft @ this number. ( I didn't save the #) A woman, claiming to be a Microsoft tech, talked me through running a scan on my computer. She then had me read to her, what was under each of the 4 categories. She said, under the category called foreign, there should be nothing but there were lots of things under that catagory. She sounded very concerned about that. Under that category, it showed, child pornography downloaded, porn websites visited, clampi virus detected, financial info used, ECHO debit & credit card used, ECHO phone lines & network hacked. She said that the clampi virus was a really bad Trojan virus. She said it can make everything look fine on my end, but be working in the background. She had me check all my accounts to see if there was anything that looked out of the ordinary. I did that and told her no. She reminded me that the virus could be working in the background. At that point, she said I would need to contact my bank but since my phone had also been compromised, she needed to create a secure line for me. She asked me to give her the phone number on the back of my debit card & she would make the call & once they answered, she would hang up. She said when I was done with the bank, to call her back at this number. 681-206-4164. She claimed her name was Michelle. She connected me with the bank & I explained what had happened. He checked my accounts & told me that someone had made 3 charges to 3 different accounts that totaled around 23,000.00. He said 2 charges were for child pornography & 1 at a casino. I told him I did not make those charges.

He acted as though he was checking & then said that it showed I had authorized these charges from my location. Again, I said I didn't make the charges. He told me that the money had not been released yet but it was scheduled to be released within the next couple of hrs. This is where my memory gets a bit fuzzy. He gave me some mumbo jumbo about having to create another transaction that would cancel the original transaction out, or something along those lines. I did question him on that but I was so freaked out about the child pornography, I accepted what he said. At that point, he told me I needed to go to the bank & withdraw all the money but at that point, didn't say what to do with it. He said he would stay on the phone with me. Once I got to the bank, he said to go into the bank & withdraw as much as they would allow but not to say anything to them if they asked questions. When I returned to my car I told him I was able to take out 17,000, He said ok and I would need to go back the next day & get the rest of the money. He told me that there had been 9 of these scams in the past several months & 4 of them turned out to be an inside job. Then he gave me another instruction. He told me take the money to a bitcoin machine, which he gave me the location of, & deposit the money into the machine. I did what he said, God only knows why. Not too long after I got home, the woman from "Microsoft" called me to see how everything went & to tell me they had a team of techs working on getting the virus off my computer & not to shut it down. I could see a scan running so I didn't shut it down. She said she would call me in the morning, which she did. She called very early & I wasn't up yet so I didn't answer the phone. She left a vm so when I got up, I listened to the vm that said to call her back. I tried calling her back but the number gave me a strange message. Immediately she called me back so she knew I was trying to call her. She proceeded to tell me that the techs were almost finished but I told her I was not seeing anymore activity on the computer so I thought they were finished. By this time I knew I had been scammed but I played along with her for a while. Then I said to her, how do I know your not scamming me. She tried to convince me that she wasn't but I wasn't buying it & continued questioning her. When she realized I was onto her, she hung up.
