On August 7, Trish Hale contacted me to place an order for her daughters baby shower. I sell Thirty One Products. After discussing what items she wanted and providing her the amount, I explained it would be easier for her to either mail me a personal check OR PayPal me if she could not use the website well enough to make the order herself. I finally agreed to have her send a cashier check. I provided my address for her to mail it. I tell her that due to the nature of the payment and potential for scam checks, I will not send the items requested until I receive and clear the payment.

Around August 10, I receive a different email with Trish panicking saying she had a “client” take care of the payments to myself and the event planner for this baby shower. She said that the client sent too much to me and wanted me to send the remainder back when I deposited it. I explained that I would, of course, remit any left over amount as it was not my money to keep.

When I finally received the payment on August 20, my bank was unable to process the payment as we could not verify the check issuers payment. I did not cash the check or deposit it, but explained to this person that the check could not be validated, so I will make sure to send the check back to the sender and write “counterfeit” on it to ensure she understood. I did not place the order with my business or send her anything. I am merely reporting this to protect other businesses like mine. This is the email I sent back to her on August 21:

“Hello Trish,

I have not submitted the order. I have found out that the “check/money order” I was sent is counterfeit. I have reported it to the US treasury, marked it counterfeit, taken a copy of the check and mailed it back to the address it was sent from.

I do not know if you are a scammer or if your client is, but someone is making counterfeit checks within your business so you may want to make sure something nefarious isn’t going on.

If you are not a scammer and legitimately want the items, you may pay online by using the website to create your order and directly ship it to yourself. I am trying to run a legitimate business and do not have time to deal with something as petty as a counterfeit check“
