My husband was contacted via Facebook from a real estate agent group by a “loan agent” from Tompkins Young Investment, LTD stating that they could almost guarantee an approved loan. He continued with the loan application and even spoke with an individual over the phone. The business seemed completely legitimate at first. Immediately upon the supposed approval of the personal loan he requested he received the loan agreement and reading over it I noticed that they required a 2% down payment prior to receiving the loan. This immediately threw up a red flag. We later spoke to the individual over the phone and asked him about the “down payment” and he basically stated it was for a “compulsory and mandatory fee for the loan processing fee”. Intrigued to see what kind of trick this guy had up his sleeve we asked where to send the payment to. We obviously never planned on sending it. The shocking laughter we had when the “lender” responded with 3 options, Bitcoin ATM, a MoneyGram, and a Bank wire transfer. Needless to say, we almost fell victim to this scam by not doing proper research and going to a well known accredited establishment.
