My school sent me an email (but had already warned against phishing attempt emails) about a way to earn extra money and had attached a link. The link sent me to a website about becoming a mystery shop. The whole thing seemed sketch but I decided to see what would happened, since they did not ask for any crucial information, such as SS numbers or account numbers. In a few days I received an email to confirm receipt of email, followed by another saying my first assignment is en route. They then sent a text about confirming my receipt of it. By then, I've decided to block the number since the package was also sketch. They had sent a letter of instructions with a Cashier's Check of $1,350. The amount is unbelievable and I decided to look into the company. When I did, I could not find any information of them online, but mystery shopper scams forums all described a similar situation, involving the exact amount of money. Apparently the intention was to have the money deposited into my accounts and then spend $1,000 of it on a "mystery shop" for gift cards. The cards would then be sent back to them, while the check would bounce in a few days. I am not sure if this is an actual scam or not, since I was not willing to go through with the entire thing, but I was advised by those around me to report it just in case, since there was a lack of information about the company.
