The scammer sent an email to the office email of the church I work for and claimed that it won the "Best Local Business" award from the "(City's Name) Award Program." Such a program doesn't exist, and why would a church win a city's best local business - makes no sense. I began wondering if the email was legit at first because of the detail included in the email and how things were worded. However, another clue this was a scam was some use of improper grammar. The scammer was asking for money in order for the church to receive the physical award, but it did not disclose an amount within the email. Instead, the email included a code that was to be entered into their website. The email even contained an image of what the physical award would look like. The email appeared to be sent from someone using the name Carlos Herrera at [email protected]. Also, the scammer kept using the church's name then stating the city and state of its location. If the award organization was based out of the same city, why would it keep repeated which city and state the church is in? I've attached a copy of the scam email.
