I got an offer for a remote job paying $30/hour. I checked the website and did what I thought was due diligence before I consented to a virtual Interview. Two days after the interview an offer was made via email and I accepted. I was then sent an application, company code of conduct and w-2 &w-4 forms. Unfortunately I supplied personal information including banking and SS#. On October 1, 2022 I was informed that a check was being FedEx to me. On October 2, 2022 this package was delivered to the wrong address. I was then told that a check for $2500 would be emailed to me and I was to immediately deposit this into my account. On October 3, 2022 I received this check and deposited it. On October 4, 2022 I was informed by my bank that the check was bogus and that my account was frozen and would be closed. The account I chose had basically no funds so I did not loose any money, but I did have to find a new bank because my bank said they could not take the chance on me. Mind you I did not attempt to withdraw any money so the bank did not loose any funds. On October 4, 2022 the scammer tried to get me to send him $200 to pay for software to load on a laptop to use for work. I refused. On October 5, 2022 the scammer inquired when the funds would be available and I informed the scammer of all that had transpired with my bank. The scammer insisted that the check was legitimate. I gave them the number of the bank and told them I was no longer involved. Thankfully I have all the emails and logs of my interactions with this scammer. I have also reported this scam to the proper authorities. The financial information I provided is now moot as the account is closed and I am looking into getting a new SS#. This could have been much worse and I do feel like a dupe. I am a little depressed but I will get over it. I hope no one else falls victim to this scam.
