My 92 y.o. mother responded to an alert that popped up on her computer screen saying she had been hacked and needed to call for help. The number she called answered as "Microsoft" and persuaded her to give them remote access to her computer to "clean" it. They then sold her several hundred dollars worth of antivirus protection and, in the process, got her credit card, bank account numbers, SS number, etc. They sent themselves an email from her email account indicating she understood and agreed with the charges, was satisfied, and promised not to contact a financial institution. Fortunately I, her son, called her shortly after this happened and had other family members intervene to close accounts, etc. Apparently no money has been lost but it was a close call, and they still have all that information. The name given by the person she talked with is Sam Allen, employee #MS00427 at extension 427.
