The application listing shared a different phone and email that was used to contact me initially. See upload listed below.

The fake rental property house listing was posted on Zillow. I contacted the seller to request to view the property. I filled out the application for properly on Zillow. I had to pay a fee of $29 to finish the application. This all seemed normal, however my bank statement said it was a recurring charge. I notified my bank this was suspicious and to do a stop payment.

After submitting the application the listing was taken off the Zillow site. I was contacted shortly after via email that my application was accepted. I called the number provided in the email to ask questions and thank the man contacting me. His name in the email was Thomas Brant.

On the phone, he sounded foreign possibly Middle Eastern. I asked when I could see the property. I got a few different answers now looking back at what he said, what Zillow said and what the emails/lease stated. At first it was mid Feb. then March first to view the property. He claimed their were tenants in the property. I was encouraged to drive by the property to check out the area but not to distribute the current tenants.

I asked Thomas on the phone how he would prefer to receive the security deposit. He said Venmo and I asked him what was his account name or to send me a money request. I did not ever receive his Venmo info.

He said I would need to secure or hold the property by filling out the lease agreement and paying the security deposit of $1575. That amount was the monthly rent. Thomas mentioned in the first email this property was a first come first serve and encouraged to hold the property. I assumed he had contacted a few potential renters and didn’t notice right away the Zillow listing was already taken down. Why take it down if you don’t have a deposit from new tenant?

The first email stated a $150 pet deposit and a $50 monthly pet fee would be included where this was not mention on the Zillow listing. As well as a first and last months rent!

We discussed via email a move in date for mid-March (3/15/23) and reducing the monthly pet fee. Thomas agreed to reducing the fee from $50 to $25. I also asked to clarify when the funds would be due to hold the property. He didn’t answer the question with dates and failed to include the pet fee and deposit in the lease. I asked him to include the info we discussed and he revised the lease agreement.

During this time, I had researched on the tax collector site who owned this property. The real property owners name listed was a women’s name with the same last name has Mr. Brant. I called the listing agents who sold the property last and confirmed detailed info about the owner of the property. Several realtors thought this sounded like a scam.

I emailed Thomas about what I found and stated if he was not listed as the property owner our lease would not be valid. He could have been a ex husband or son? After that last email I have not had any further communication with Thomas Brant.
