I was contacted by a friend on LinkedIn referring me to do work as a secret shopper. They sent me a job application to fill out online. 3 months later, I get a text saying a package was delivered with my first assignment. I received an envelope from the USPS with a cashier's check for $2,900.42 made out to me personally. I'm supposed to deposit the check, then purchase $2,500 worth of eBay gift cards from any store listed, take photos of them and send them in an email along with a series of questions to evaluate my shopping experience. Then the $400 left over would be my fee for the work.

I immediately became suspect and called the number from the text, which came across as a California number. I got a recording asking me to put in a code to contact the global client, or something like that, which led me to believe the phone number was actually in another country. The address on the envelope is from Puerto Rico further establishing this.

I tried calling again and it just said the Google number you reached is not available. I then texted him asking if he could remind me what this was about, since it's been a few months. He gave me vague information about how I was referred to this and filled out an online application, but wouldn't give me any further details and then stopped responding when I continued asking questions.

I contacted the friend who originally sent me the message on LinkedIn and she told me that her account was hacked a couple of months ago, and she had her password changed. The exchange I had with her on the messaging app on LinkedIn is deleted on her end, and I can only see the responses from me. So I cannot locate the original message sent to me with the information / website I was directed to fill out the application. This is obviously very concerning because I don't even remember what information about me I gave them! In his text response he told me it was a referral service called Survey Monkey, which does exist online. But there's no way for me to verify if that is the same place I filled out the application.
