I received a voicemail about student loan forgiveness for employees of a non-profit organization. When I called back the young man who answered started by sharing a sob story about being in severe pain due to an accident and having a 4 year old child at home he needed to support. I thought this was odd but listened politely without engaging him in this unsolicited glimpse into his personal life. He then told me I could have my loans forgiven but I needed to apply soon as this program is ending soon. while we spoke I searched his company on line and found it is a .com for profit web address which left me feeling uncomfortable. He wanted my email so I gave him one that is not attached to any of my bill paying. I use it for junk mail. then he said he needed to create a user name and password for Federal Student Aid as I hadn't created one when I did my FAFSA. I said I had or I wouldn't have completed the FAFSA and gotten loans in the first place. He asked me to give him that info and I said I'd been out of school too long to remember. He told me he was sending me an email with his contact info and I needed to call FSA and ask for that info. and if they asked why to say "I wanted to review my loans" I asked why I wouldn't just say I was working with him and his company and he said because my loan holder wouldn't want me to have my loan forgiven so they would try to talk me out of it. This didn't make sense as the FSA people and my student loan people are two different entities. I said I would.

I called FSA and told them the details of my contact with Student Loan Doctor (SLDR) and they assured me no one would ever ask for my username and password unless it was a scam as it gives them access to all my financial info. and they could get loans in my name (which is what I thought). I responded to the email from SLDR and told him I was advised this was a scam and not to contact me. Also that I would be filing a report with the Better Business Bureau. I've heard nothing else from him. Pehaps he's in too much pain from his accident to respond ;)
