There are two phone numbers that were involved with this scam. The first is from the initial text message which is (217) 867-3169 who was posing as An Muylaert. I was then told that through a new screening process with The Bureau of Global Talent Management, I would be directed to download the Signal app to my phone so I could conduct an interview with a second number (615) 434-5439 who was posing as Dieter De Groote. I would no longer have anymore contact with the first number and everything was through the Signal app with the person posing as Dieter.
We went through the interview process, which was the same as any in person interview, I’ve had, basic run down of the company and job duties and responsibilities. I never directly spoke with anyone and didn’t think to question the U.S. area code numbers; I tried to call both numbers and they had to connect via Google Voice. This was all on Friday June 16, 2023. From there they told me I would be a good fit for the company and that I would be starting the on-boarding process on the following Monday. From there they had sent me a job offer letter, a copy of the Strukton Code of Conduct handbook, a W4, and an I-9 Form to be filled out and the signed portions scanned back to “Dieter”. All the forms looked legitimate as the Strukton forms had all the official logos and the W4 and I-9 forms were the real copies of those form. I had filled out everything as I normally would after signing on with a company and scanned them back to them.
After that I was told I would be sent a check for the equipment that I needed, which I received in the mail and was instructed to deposit it into my bank account; the full amount of the check was $4,892.45. I was told that I would need a computer, printer, scanner, and fax machine along with several accounting programs that needed to be installed on the computer to be able to perform my job duties. I thought they had sent me the all the funds I needed for the equipment needed for the job because they had told me that I would be ordering from an approved vendor as everything needed to have the Strukton logo on them. Once the check had cleared and the funds deposited, I was then instructed to pull $4,700.00 in cash out and deposit it into a BitShop ATM. They told me this was going back into their account, and it would be more secure for them and for me as I would not have to input my bank account information into any online vendor sites.
The next day, today June 23, 2023, I was told that it was going to take another $1,000.00 for the equipment to be fully installed with the software programs that I would need on the computer and was asked if I was able to pay for this. I said no as I had been unemployed/working part time for the last three months. “Dieter” then asked if I had any amount, I could deposit for a down payment to which I also replied to him no. Once I said no a second time there was no further communication between us, despite my attempts to try to communicate further with this person about the job.
