I placed a classified ad for a free electric wheelchair. A Sterling MacKinnon (email: [email protected]) contacted me thru email about the electric wheelchair on 7/25/23. Red flags started to occur when offered me $500 for the free electric chair. I have many emails (which I have saved) from Sterling about the wheelchair. Another red flag when I asked what town Sterling was from twice and he never answered. Sterling communicated that a check for overnight delivery would sent. I was immediately to deposit the cashiers check so that the check would clear and Sterling would be able to pick up the wheelchair. The check did not come from USPS but UPS and the check did arrive in my mail box nor front door but the side door. The check was not for $500 but for $2,720 and there were 2 envelopes and 2 checks for the same amount that had the same exact check number, did not reference the wheelchair and his name was not referenced on the check at all. The check was from Fifth Third Bank who are located in Cincinnati, Ohio. Check # 000557957 042000314 72839649751 . This check number was on both checks. Sterling kept saying that the tracking indicates the check should have arrived and pressuring me that I should deposit the check so it will clear. I did not answer Sterling about the status of the check. I sent an email asking for Sterling's phone number but no response. Unfortunately, I gave him my phone number and asked Sterling to call me as I have concerns. Sterling said the call will be made later and wanted the status of the check telling me it needs to be cleared. As of 8/6 Sterling has never called me. On 8/7 I received 6 emails asking about the status of check. I have not responded. I did go to my credit union, Maine Family FCU who examined the check and determined it was fraudulent. Thank goodness I did not deposit it. I also reported it to the Sheriff's office in Androscoggin County, Maine on 8/7/23. I plan to shred and not communicate with Sterling MacKinnon. Posted is the 2 envelopes and the 2 cashiers checks.
