On 08/15/2022 I received an email from “Expedia Group” extending an interview opportunity for a remote graphic design job that I had applied to via Indeed. The interview process was all conducted via email and I was immediately given the position. I was contacted by three different emails: “[email protected]”, “new@[email protected]”, and “[email protected]” before being notified that a check was being sent to my home and was to be used to “purchase equipment” for my home office. I was told to purchase an iMac Pro 27” desktop computer, a printer, a headset, among other items as well as subscriptions to multiple graphic design tools used in the industry. The check arrived on 08/20/2022 via FedEx and was revealed to amount to $7,895. Upon depositing the check into my account, I was being texted with urgency by my hiring coordinator “Jeff Hurst” asking me if I had any personal funds available to use to purchase the equipment requested of me and that I would be reimbursed later on once the check cleared. I was told that I would be purchasing the equipment via an “accredited vendor” that worked with the company. I declined and when I inquired about my on-the-job training, I was left in the dark.
