I got a job offer for a junior graphic design position. I was told the check would be sent in the mail so I could buy equipment to begin training. The check came, and I deposited it into my checking account. What normally would take a day or two would end up being 8 days as I was told the bank didn’t recognize who sent the check. When I told this person who “hired” me about the situation, they suggested I buy 3 $500 gift cards so they could buy the equipment and send it my way, and use the check money as a reimbursement. When I repeatedly told this person I couldn’t do that, they repeatedly insisted that I had to. I went to the bank the next day, and told them I believed this was a scam and the check was a fraud. They were able to reject the check, unfreeze my account after a day, and I put a freeze on my credit report. I never heard from this person again.
