On July 12th 2021 two individuals were going door to door in my neighborhood, implying that they represented our local utility provider. (I should state that they identified themselves as employees of Spark Energy, which their uniforms also indicated, but that they suggested that they were affiliated with our actual gas provider, Consumers Energy) One of them came to my home, stated that I had someone out reading my meter at some point recently (this was false) suggested that I may have been overcharged on my utility bill, that they had sent me a memo which I failed to respond to (also false,) and that I needed to give him my paper statement so he could correct it. There were a series of red flags in the course of the interaction that led me to believe the interaction was fraudulent. The individual was very nervous, was compulsively drinking from a water bottle, made a series of claims that were demonstrably false and rapidly used a bunch of technical sounding terms in order to try and coerce me into surrendering my statement. When I indicated that I would not do so, he said that they would be in the neighborhood until late and would continue to come by until I handed over my information, as they needed to resolve this. I asked him to excuse himself from my property and not return. After this interaction, I contacted my service provider who stated unequivocally that they did not represent them, that this was an ongoing scam and that once they got physical possession of my account statement they would have more than likely switched me over to their own service without my consent. I also contacted my local police department, who implied that at the very least Spark Energy did not have a permit to do solicitation in our city. While I did not personally lose any of my credentials or account information, the gentleman were in my neighborhood for some time before law enforcement showed up and they got spooked. My concern is that they will continue to target the residents of my neighborhood (particularly the elderly.) After this interaction, I did some digging and found out that this particular company has had myriad complaints against it for this very behavior, and that the ScamPulse.com has established a "pattern of complaint" for what is described as fraudulent behavior. I would also direct any interested parties to refer to a notice posted by the MPSC (Michigan Public Service Commission) dated June 28th of 2021, where they direct Michiganders to be on the lookout for this exact scam, as several of their own committee members were targeted in a remarkably similar fashion to what I have described. Finally, I am including a picture of the individual who came to my door, with the hopes that if he attempts to mislead homeowners into handing over their personal information, they might be equipped to address the situation in a way that does not result in them being victimized.
