My elderly Mother's computer froze up with a message saying that she had malware virus and needed to contact SoftTech Solutions to remedy the problem. They advised her that she would have to send them approximately $400.00 and they would be able to fix the problem, and that they were a "Microsoft" affiliate company. Without checking into it, she sent them the money and allowed them remote access to her computer so they could fix, what turned out to be, a non-existent problem. Thankfully she notified me in time and I was able to put a stop payment on the check and furthermore change her account as they now had access to same due to obtaining her account and routing numbers.
