Type of a scam Phishing
Since hw was a very wealthy individual and had no other known family members to inherit his funds lawyer is suggesting that I should inherit money in his bank accounts since I have the same last name as him. We can split the funds and he will help me to claim most of the funds while he also receives a large percentage for his trouble.
This lawyer sent me an scan of an official document (bank statement) from BNP Paribas bank where there are listed transactions in multi-million USD ammounts (hundreds of millions) originating from and paid to some very known large international companies (Google, Facebook, ExonMobil, Chevron...)
All I needed to do was send him my personal information and he will arrange for flight tickets to be purchased for me to fly to Ethiopia to pickup and sign documents which will be brought to me by his local contact, and then fly to Manila Philippines where the funds will be released to my account.
Since all this was very suspicious I contacted my friend in banking sector and he immediately pointed out that the official looking bank statement had many irregularities and that it was probably fake, hence the whole story was an elaborate scam.
I did not pursue this further and am only writing this here in case other people happen to come across this kind of scam.
In the end his email address stopped working and I did not hear from him again.
