The scammer seemed very legit at first, I will give them that. They had a legit address, company name and the “Sherry Bullwinkel” person who reached out to me is in fact a real person working at the company. I did thorough research into the company, the offer letter and whatnot seemed very legitimate as well. However, they then sent me a startup check (which is typically a red flag with remote job offers), and attempted to have me pay a vendor (via zelle/gift card) for the office supplies needed. However, how the scam works is that the bank puts the money they send in your account, they have you buy their “products”, and then since the check was fake, the money wasn’t either, so the bank does a chargeback and you are left with your account in the negatives. They took my name, address, phone number, birthday, etc. However, they did not take my social security number. Beware of these types of scams.

I have copied and pasted below an email that I sent to the real company the scammer claimed to be from, Aura Biosciences, to inquire as to whether the recruiter who contacted me was really from their company or not. In it, I explained the nature of the scam.

The representative of Aura Biosciences confirmed that it was a scam and requested that I report it.

I have also included a link to an "interview" form they wanted me to fill out for the job they were offering and a document sent to me which describes the company and the job.

I have uploaded the file entitled "Welcome to Aura BioSciences" explaining the company and fake job position.

Here is the email I sent to Aura Biosciences in which I describe the scam:

I am concerned that I have been contacted about a job offer for a work from home Data Entry Clerk position that claims to be from your company, Aura Biosciences, but could in fact be a scam. If it is a scam, I want your company to be aware of it. I will also be glad to contact the Better Business Bureau.

I went on both your website and Indeed and saw no open positions for Data Entry Clerk. Furthermore, I am not a scientist and have no background in science so I do not know why my resume would be chosen for this position.

The name of the person who contacted me yesterday (I was surprised she was contacting me on July 4!) about this supposed job offer is Sherry Bullwinkel. She claims to be a senior recruiter. Her email is [email protected].

I have attached a document that she sent me explaining the company and job. I had to ask for this information.

This person also set up an interview this morning through RingCentral. I thought it would be a video interview. However, instead she sent me a jot form to fill out within the interview time and told me I had to fill it out within 30-60 minutes. I chose not to do so because the language and questions of the document seemed weird.

I have also copied and pasted below the two emails she sent yesterday about interviewing me for the position. I have included the "from" lines for each of the emails. I was concerned with the careless grammar and strange formatting used in the emails but I still thought they were legitimate at the time. Below these emails, I copied and pasted the message she sent me this morning through RingCentral.
