Consumer received the following letter:

Apple store mystery shopping survey assignment

Attn: Prospective Mystery Shopper,

Schlesinger Group is leading Brand Audit and quality check provider. We supply brand audits and retail audits for prestige businesses and premium brands. The merits of this exercise are in the survey itself and provide you to the opportunity to valuable and sensitive information that helps with business development and first-hand consumer experience. This envelope contains a check of $*** You are required to deposit the check at your bank, wait for funds to be available before you begin your task. 

Assignment instruction 

You will evaluating a local APPLE STORE  in you city. Our check cover all expenses. Evaluation, shopping taxes, and you compensation of $300 for completing this survey assignment. Purchase the below items from an Apple store in your city.

I inquired about mystery shopper position, I was contacted by email stating I have been hired and they would be sending envelope in the mail with instructions. I received the envelope with a check in the amount of $2,990 instructing to go to local apple store to complete a survey of the store and to buy two gift cards one for $1500 the second for $1100. The rest was my salary to complete the task. I received a few texts asking confirmation of the envelope. I immediately became suspicious, the return address was a Los Angeles, CA the postmark on the envelope was North Houston, TX and the cashiers check was from Chicago, Il. I contacted the company and they said it was a scam, not sent out by their company.

Response to question below "did scammer attempt to take money"; I'm under the impression they were going to have me send them the 2 gift cards. If I would have done this we (both my husband and I were contacted) would have been out at least $2690 or the whole $2990.

The rest was my salary to complete the task. I received a few texts asking confirmation of the envelop. I immediately became suspicious, the return address was an Atlanta, GA, the postmark on the envelope was North Houston, and the area code was a San Diego area code. I contacted the company and they are a legitimate company conduction online surveys, however they do not conduct "mystery shopper" surveys.

Applied to be a secret shopper and finally received an assignment but my letter has several typos in a letter with a *** ck to deposit. What to make sure it is not a scam.

I received check in the amount of $2989 drawn on point loma

Credit union San Diego Calif 92123 requesting that I purchase 2 iphone x 256gb and go to the nearest apple store as a ( secret shopper) and evaluate them complete a valuation form and the remainder $300 would be for me to keep as my compensation for the survey

I want to know if this is a scam

I do not plan to use the check until I get clarification and assurance
