Scammer Posing As Schlesinger Group Reports & Reviews (1)

- Murfreesboro, TN, USA

I responded to a LinkedIn message stating the Schlesinger group was looking for secret shoppers. The Schlesinger Group is a real company, but I learned that this particular individual sending the message did not work for them and he had been hacked. I wasn't sure when I responded, but a few days later I started getting texts messages from a "Robert Gregory Ph.D Survey Evaluation Coordinator" saying I was approved to be a shopper. I responded but didn't hear back for a few days. I deleted the message thinking it was a scam. Then a few days later he reached out again so I thought I was being impatient. I received a cashier's check and was asked if I had certain stores in the area, including Apple, and I said yes. I was then sent on my first "task". It was to buy a $2000 gift card and a $600 gift card and send the survey evaluation. I was told that $300 was my compensation and they would let me know what to do with the additional $82 on the check. I bought the Apple cards, obviously a huge mistake, and took the stickers off and sent the pictures via text as they asked. I was nervous but hadn't done it before and since the Schlesinger group checked-out I thought it might be ok. The biggest red flag was sending pictures of the cards, so I should have followed my gut instinct. I then asked what I was supposed to do with the additional $82 so they said I needed to buy a $50 iTunes card and send it the same way I sent the other cards. That is when I really knew something was wrong. I called my bank but they couldn't do anything because since I cashed the check it wasn't considered fraudulent activity. I then went to Apple, just hours after I had purchased the cards, and everything but $10 was gone from the cards. Apple refunded me my $10 and apologized that this was happening to me. At that time I filed a formal police report and was told that because it was over $1000 it is considered a felony. I have updated the bank with the case number, but there isn't anything to really do about it, just simply cover by butt in case this "Robert" creep tries to pull anything even more suspicious. It has only been a few days and my "task-giver Robert" doesn't have a clue I've already reported him, nor does he care, I'm sure. He got his $2600 in Apple products and it's gone like a fart in the wind. I'm continuing to get text messages from him asking when I'll send the iTunes card. How about never. I haven't responded to him and I'm waiting for the faulty check they gave me to drop from the bank, as it surely will within 2-14 business days. I've already done what I need to, financially, to cover the loss. I didn't spend any of my $300 "task compensation" money of course, nor did I buy an iTunes card. You'd think the thief (thieves) would stop being so greedy after $2600 in gift cards. Obviously not. The officer helping said a detective would be on the case to try and track down the gift card numbers and how they were used, but I'm not holding my breath. Maybe in the near future I'll get a check for the amount I lost, but if not then our life will go on. Karma is an evil thing so their robbery will come back to haunt them. Unfortunately for me I was stupid enough to send those gift card pictures, which is completely unlike me because I am notorious for being quite the detective, I over-analyze everything, and I don't trust anyone. I guess everyone has an off-day. This scammer took a valid company name and behaved in a way that goes completely against their company policy and procedures. I should have dug a little bit deeper, clearly. Right now I'm just waiting for it to end, and I continue to send screen shots to the detective working the case every time "Robert" has the balls the text me. Good times!
