Scammer claimed to be from Tech Live Connect (TLC) Reports & Reviews (1)

- Schaumburg, IL, USA

A guy using the name Shane Watson (Indian accent) said he worked for Tech Live Connect (This real company is also known as Premium Tech Support). That company's phone is 877-958-7560 but Shane was calling from 415-690-2195. This company is owned/run by another called Avangate at 646-558-6927. Shane (employee ID Shane 12389) called me 3 times on 10-4-16 insisting I had to be on my computer to get my refund. He said the company was going out of business and they had to take their software off my computer or it would lock up. I put him off till the next day so I had time to call TLC (the actual business) which I had purchased tech support from several months earlier. Shane knew I was a customer. The next day, 10-5-16, he called early in the morning and I put him off again. I called TLC and asked the receptionist if they were going out of business but she didn't answer. Here it gets confusing as there was some beeping as if another call was coming in and for a while I didn't know who I was talking to. I thought I was still talking to TLC as the receptionist transferred me to a tech who was Shane and he proceeded to try to get me to log into my bank account so they could transfer the money right from their bank to mine. He would not credit my account or my credit card or send it to PayPal or mail me a check (he had my home address but I said it was not mine when he read it to me. That worries me a bit though.) Shane could not explain why nobody else does business like this but them or why I absolutely had to be on my computer. "HQ insists we do it this way, this is how our company does it" he said. He tried to show me a spreadsheet from their account at Chase bank (www.chase.com//code demo) but I noticed the address of the page started out "http://demo.chase.com" as if this was just a demo page and he was pretending this spreadsheet was the real thing. He seemed amateurish. We argued for 4 hours. He was very insistent that I get my money back even when I said keep it. He would not let me confirm anything such as why PayPal would not deal with them. His insistence that I do what he said immediately was one of the many red flags. He did give me the name of a guy in their refund department, Mr. James Morgan" at 800-983-5491. I didn't talk to him. I was suspicious from the start and had unplugged all my external hard drives before I made my phone call but I thought I was talking to the company I'd been doing business with for months. They had control of my computer months earlier to solve a problem and did install software then leave it behind when they left. That was my weak point. I wanted them to remove it. instead he loaded new software and used it to lock me out. After a few minutes he called me back and let me in again with the password "london123". I wasn't overly worried because I keep nothing on my "C" drive but the OS & my programs. All data is highly backed up on external hard drives which were unplugged. When I still refused to log into my bank account he started to shut my computer down again. I saw him trying to do something very fast and I immediately shut the computer off and hung up the phone. He called me right away asking "Did you shut off your computer?" I said yeah and hung up again. He called 3 more times the next day. I knew he'd found that he'd gotten nothing. I figured he probably tried downloading files from my C drive but I keep them empty. When he called the next day he identified himself as "the guy who locked you out of your computer." He wanted to try again to get into my bank account, no doubt. I said (very nonchalantly) "Oh, yeah, I'm working on it, I don't need your help." and I hung up on him again. An hour later he called me back again sounding even sadder. I just hung up. I didn't even answer the third time. I had called Avangate, the company that owns(?) TLC and spoke with a woman, senior tech Mika at 646-558-6927. She seemed to be able to pull up files about what had happened. She told me to expect a call from Sanjay (employee # SGS10856) but instead I got a call from Thomas (employee # TLC15404) from phone # 855-852-7658. After some questioning, I found he knew the name Sanjay and his ID number. However I was suspicious of everyone by now so I didn't talk much with him. Later that day, 10-5, I got several more calls from Thomas and others all telling me to call them at the TLC number 877-958-7560. That's not Avangate's number, that's the TLC number I called at the start of this whole thing. Now I don't trust anyone at those companies. In the end, I lost nothing from my computer. I just had to reinstall software. I got some help from Hewlett Packard and was online within 24 hours. But they have not finished getting my computer fully operational - I can't download and install Windows 10 which I had when this started. I filed a complaint with the ScamPulse.com about their tech support.
