Scam still going on in June 2022

If you're using DuckDuckGo none of these scam reports show up which is just terrible. It only shows you results about the actor, which I'm sure the scammers know about. I was contacted from the e-mail: [email protected] It all sounded mostly reasonable, and no more unreasonable than some of the clients I've had UNTIL they told me they were going to send me more money with the check and then asked me to send some of it forward. I declind and just asked for the amount of the first deposit. When I asked for the update on the first payment they tried to pressure me into accepting the larger amount and blamed me for the delay. An absolutely horrendous affair.

This is called a "fake check scam" or an "overpayment scam" which you can read on Wikipedia. The idea is they send you a check, which you accept and then send your own money to someone else. A few days later the check will bounce and you would have lost your money that you sent to the next person.

As an illustrator I am cautioned about being scammed out of my work, not money, at least not directly.

Be careful out there, and make sure you REALLY get results when researching if a contact is a scam and try all the search engines. I've learnt my lesson.

Roy Rodgers - Pandemic Illustrations

A person calling themselves Roy Rodgers submitted a form on my website about some potential illustrations. I emailed back and asked fore more details. Title of the Workshop: Pandemic: Precaution and Prevention, attendees 15-17. Wanted illustrations for under listed scenarios and gave sizing and info with a deadline. Their budget was $750 per piece (5 illustration pieces total). They stated they normally pay with cashier's check or certified bank check "considering the amount involved". They then sent me 5 drawings of the exact illustrations they wanted, saying they did them themselves (clearly stolen from somewhere), as I asked about style. I sent them examples of finished colorings to see what type they wanted and their response was "wow youve done a great job". All of this confirmed my suspicion of scam. They also corrected and said they only make payments through "certified bank check". I feel sorry for whoever's drawings they stole. Glad I didn't let myself get too involved, not my first scam interaction sadly.

A person identifying himself as "Roy Rodgers" emailed me about a freelance illustration project. I wrote, and we both signed, a contract outlining the scope of the work and payment protocol. The payment was supposed to be in the form of an initial deposit of 50% of the total project cost. Without notifying me, Rodgers sent a me a check for twice the initially agreed upon payment amount, bypassing the deposit approach. He told me that there was now a phase 2 to the project. Several days later, he asked that the phase 2 half of the payment be sent to someone named Adam Bielski that Rodgers claimed was his business associate. I attempted to return the money directly to Rodgers, but our mutual banks wouldn't allow easy transfer to him. I sent the payment to Bielski via wire transfer. The following day, Rodgers again requested an unspecified return of payment, and then called me on the phone. Over the phone, it sounded like Rodgers was in a call center. I then confirmed my growing suspicion of a scam and returned the remaining payment from phase 1 of the project to Bielski via wire transfer.
