Received a call and someone saying they represented Regions Bank (Alabama) explained someone had frauded my account. They said they were from Regions Fraud Department in San Francisco, California. Someone had tried to take $1600 from my account. I asked what do we do now. He said I am going to give you a series of numbers to block calls to your phone because you are going to have people call you who are trying to get information regarding your accounts. That is how they handle the protection of accountholders. He said it would be 3-5 days before I could use my phone again to be safe. The numbers given were *719092792702 and *729092792702. He did successfully block the calls using the second number. The first number would not work so he gave the second number starting *72 and that successfully blocked calls. I talked to someone who thought it might be questionable what happened. So, I called my bank and they indicated there was no hold on the account and that they saw that someone tried to take money (a lesser amount $979) from the account. The "real" bank stopped that withdrawal. I also called US Cellular and they said that *71 and *72 are ways to block all incoming calls. In addition, I found out my number was forwarded to a number that was working for the scammers. Multiple people I know tried to call my number and were forwarded to the scammers. Various people answered the phone. I believe the 3-5 days were amble time for them to take as much as possible out of my account in that timeframe. When I was speaking with the real fraud company at Regions Bank they confirmed they had someone working there with the same name that the "scammer" provided. The person (scammer) calling also had a lot of personally identifiable information. He also had me send a copy of my drivers license and debit card to them.
