A pop-up came on my screen that said that someone was attempting to get my information and a malicious attempt had been stopped. It gave a number to call right away and said Microsoft support. When I called and asked if it was Microsoft support they said they were not Microsoft support and not affiliated with them but they work on all windows computers. He had me go to the run function on my computer so we could remote connect. He closed some of the icons for programs that run in the background down by the date/time in the bottom right hand corner of the screen. Then he pulled up the event viewer and asked if I hadn't been getting notifications about the errors occuring. The event viewer is on your windows computer and I think it was a scare tactic as it is often minor errors that windows tracks. Then he asked me about my antivirus software and said that windows defender wasn't working in the background and he showed me by clicking on the carrot in the bottom right hand corner that shows your programs running in the background. He then went to command prompt and typed in Netstat -SP TCP and said there are 18 connections to my computer and some of them appear to be coming from Russia. He said there would be a one time fee of 199 to fix this and he would connect me to a technician to do it and it would take 1-2 hours to do it. I asked what would be installed and he said software that would protect but he couldn't tell me a brand and said it varies based on the system. He said it would cost $10 to renew in 1 year for the software (pretty cheap renewal especially if you don't know what software you will be installing :) I said I wanted to talk to my brother and he asked if he could call me back in 15 minutes. He said his name was Jason (although he had a strong accent). He gave me his direct number but I didn't try calling it back. I hope he didn't install malware on my computer.
