I bought a new computer a couple of weeks ago and was looking for a recipe for ginger ale punch and suddenly a screen pops up with all these emergency warnings from Windows and call this number immediately so I did and there is a guy who talks about my security and my Firewall and that my IP address is at risk and he can clean it up and there are 9 bad people from other countries who are able to access my financial accounts. Also I needed to pay him $299.00 to have his team remove those 9 people from my IP address. I told him I was going to call Windows to confirms his employment and I would call him back and he got really quiet and said ok.

Yesterday (3/14/23), when I turned on my computer it was locked, and a voice alert said an unauthorized person had accessed my computer. The data on my computer screen made it appear there was a Microsoft phone number to call for tech assistance. I called the number and “Steve” said I had been infected by Trojan malware. He proceeded to rectify the situation, during which I gave him control of my computer, as well as my name, email, and cell phone number. As payment I was told to write a check ($399 for tech service and $1,100 for a malware program I had requested = $1,400). A picture of the check was transmitted and I was instructed to mail UPS Express, ASAP, the check and phone in the tracking number to (838)217-2498. He said I would receive a call this morning (3/15/23), which I haven’t. He asked for my mother’s maiden to use as a code by which I could verify the call. I live in a rural Montana community and would have had to drive 60 miles to the closest UPS store, and said I would send the check today. After I hung up and thought about the transaction, I realized I had been hacked and didn’t send the check. I am now taking measures to rectify my mistake.

My laptop crashed and an alert message told me not to turn off computer or try to shut down, but I was to call phone number which I mistakenly thought was Microsoft. Instead caller advised me that all my devices were compromised and they would fix problem. During that process they advised me that my IP address was not secure and they could fix it for a fee of $399.00 and this fee would be an annual fee, and that all my devices were effected by this, and even if I decided to purchase a new laptop, any new devices would be affected by this as well. I have not mailed a check, but was asked to give them my check # (not my acct #), and mail the following day (today). I have not mailed the check but cannot reach any site on my laptop, although I can use my i-phone and desktop computer.
