Facebook ad in a group that homes Scottish Terriers—both rescues & puppies—advertised 10-week old Male Scottish Terrier. “Breeder” said puppy was AKC registered, and provided all health info on the dog & parents. The whole operation appeared to be legit—a contract was provided that was very standard for the sale of a puppy, the deposit was about normal. The price for the puppy was a little on the low side—especially because the dog was said to be “from champion bloodlines”—but depending on how far back those bloodlines go and how far back the champion was, the price wasn’t a tip-off. I paid the deposit and, as the contract explained, I would pay $250 for transfer of ownership with AKC and the final $250 upon receipt of the puppy. When the AKC certificate was sent, it appeared to be altered—almost as if someone had copied an AKC certificate and whited-out the info and PDF’d the rest of the info in. The info looked suspicious, as well, and was missing some standard information, so I called AKC to verify the info. AKC informed me that none of the info provided matched and that this was most likely a scam. I asked the “breeder” for the deposit back; they haven’t been heard from since.
