I lost my email password. My husband had a phone number 1-800-926-7048 to contact Yahoo for help. He called and spoke with a male and then handed the phone to me. The man (Steve Gibson) said he needed my permission to take control of my computer to be able to reset my password. As I thought I was talking to someone from Yahoo, I gave him permission through Log Me In Rescue. The name of the company appeared as Pyramid IT, so I asked if I was talking to Yahoo and he said they are a contractor for Yahoo. As we were talking, he explained that it wasn't my computer that was the problem, it was that my IP address had been hacked and it was affecting all of the devices connected to this IP address (other computers, tablets, smart phones, etc.) As we were talking, he asked me a few times if I was sure I couldn't remember my password, possibly told someone else. I said no - absolutely not, that was why I was calling. He then said because of the IP hack, I would need to hire an IP Engineer Level 5 Network Programmer to fix the problem. At this point, I realized this was a scam and asked that the remote session be ended. He immediately ended the session. I then called our internet provider (AT&T) and explained what had happened. The man (Robin) at AT&T checked the phone line and said there is definitely not an IP address problem and Yahoo does not have a help phone number. He had me sign on to my computer and the internet and it was fine. He said sometimes these people are able to infect the computer with a virus which locks it and then they ask for money to unlock it. However, as I was able to sign on and get on the internet, these guys were probably scammers trying to sell me a product. Also he said all correspondence with Yahoo must be through email. He gave me the email address for Yahoo help and I was able to get my password reset. But because I was unsure what information the scammer was able to get, I'm in the process of changing all my financial accounts, etc. just in case. What a lesson learned!
