Young contractor came knocking on our door saying they were in the neighbourhood doing jobs and noticed part of our driveway and walkway up to our front door had sunk under the interlocking bricks. Promised to re-level that section and power wash, remove weeds and fill the driveway with polymeric sand. Quoted $6K. When asked about insurance and warranty he said it would be all in the contract and he had the people available to do it that day. His manager (older heavier-set man) and another young contractor came by, had Irish accents. Came in a black truck. They seemed very experienced and reassuring during their spiel but it was all a scam. The first young man had said payment could be made in any form and 7 years warranty but manager later said it needed to be in cash, payable that day, could provide 10 years warranty and they could start right away. Timing was terrible as we had plans and had to leave, also needed to figure out a way to obtain the money. So many red flags but we had out-of-town visitors and other reasons to jump at this chance. However when we came back, they were about done and asked for the money right away. Said concrete needed to dry but they would be back in an hour. They even talked about helping us with another small job as well later on. It was all a scam. Couldn’t get in touch with them afterwards. Called them a couple of days later and the manager said they were at a job but would be by on Monday. Called Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and it all went direct to voice mail. Discovered an empty bag they left in the garage - they had used playground sand, not polymeric. They still need to come back to fix the section they were supposed to level off but didn’t (it looks worse now than before). And they didn’t give us a copy of the contract, so we have nothing other than a pamphlet but they have been paid.
