Received a phone call today that showed on Caller ID like a local phone number ************* when I answered they asked if they could count on me for a donation. They caught me off guard and I said that I could donate $20 I was transferred to someone who said they accepted all major credit cards. Without really thinking, I provided them with my debit card information. They asked for my full name and already had my address. Said that they would send a receipt for my donation in 2-3 business days. I asked for a call back number and was given *************. As soon as I hung of from the call, I thought to myself, what did I just do? I tried calling the number that showed on Caller ID and received a recording that it was no longer in service, I then called the 866 number and got a recording that indicated I had reached the "New York State Crime Stoppers" and to leave a message. Nope. Why would I be called by the New York State Crime Stoppers when I live in Illinois. I immediately contacted my financial institution and asked them to place a stop on any transactions that were not already showing as pending and to issue me a new debit card to be safe. Luckily the transaction for this "charity" did not show as pending and I should be safe.
