Initially contacting me via Freelancers.com, I was "offered" a remote job for an "art gallery" where I'd be working to take care of customers. I first initiated contact via email I was given where further communication was by Hangouts. Within days, with very minimal actual work done, I was notified by my "employer" that a customer is directing his payment of $2,400 to me and I'd pay $2,000 to the "painter" via PayPal (well, $2,058.90 including fees since I used my credit card for PayPal so I didn't lose money from my bank account; instead, my card balance increased by that amount). Turns out that the check of $2,400 was fake as confirmed by my bank and the bank that the check was supposedly issued by. I was then notified that the customer wants to increase the order and that another check would arrive (it didn't this time) and that I was asked to buy eBay gift cards and the "employer" kept being persistent about it when I said I can't go to the store (requesting me to send someone to the store). I became very suspicious so I stopped responding. This "employer" is continuing to message me and at one point, messaging me that he/she needs my urgent attention. I notified my credit card company and my local police department.
