I was on the internet when I received a pop-up saying my computer had been blocked & I had 5 mins to call 1-888-829-5571 or my personal info was at risk. If I did not call, my computer would be disabled to protect the internet. I called the # & was told my computer received a Trojan virus & I had 2 choices. Was there a Cisco near me to which I could take my computer plus all of my devices b/c my IP address has been compromised & would need to be changed. I had never heard of Cisco & didn't know if there was one close. The person asked for my zip code to check & said there was not a Cisco in my area so my other choice was to have my computer repaired online & he referred me to PC Maple at 888-509-0352. PC Maple said it would need to take control of my computer to remove malware/viruses & recommended I purchase a program which would provide lifetime protection for all of my devices & that the virus/malware protection I have on my computer would not catch this kind of attack. It would cost $300 to repair my computer & $400 for the protection program. I asked several times if they were affiliated with Microsoft & they indicated they were. I asked if they took Visa & was told they would need the routing & acct # for my checking acct, which I foolishly gave them. Fortunately, a short time later a family member told me I had been scammed & I was able to block my accts. To date it doesn't appear they were able to get any money, but I don't know what info on my computer they may be able to exploit. I have since found out that there is a Cisco in my area & that according to the PC Maple website, they do take credit cards. PC Maple has called my home & cell phone several times requesting I contact them ASAP to make sure my computer is operating correctly & so they can close their file. I have blocked their calls from 888-509-0352, but they have called & left messages from 800-875-3018 & sent an e-mail requesting I contact them. I have taken steps to protect my info & am remaining vigilant. I hope this is the end of this nightmare.
