I came across a Craigslist ad for Greensboro, NC for Russian Spaniel/Cavalier Spaniel mix puppies on Monday, 12/21/20. The ad was posted 2 days before. The ad listed the puppies for sale for $550 and listed a phone number to ask for more information and included several photographs of the puppies and mother dog. I sent 2 text messages in the early afternoon of 12/21 and waited to hear back. I called the number and left a voicemail in the evening. After leaving a voicemail, the individual texted me back and said they have 2 puppies still available, texted me photos of the 2 puppies and told me that pickup of the puppies would be on 12/23 at their home at 8301 Spotswood Road Summerfield, NC. They said to reserve a puppy then I would need to send them $20 on PayPal with the name of the puppy to reserve it and then I would pay $500 when picking up the puppy. I sent $20 on PayPal to the email address and sent it via the "Friends and Family" portion of PayPal as the seller told me that sending it as Goods and Services would lead to PayPal asking for shipping updates. After sending the $20, I thought that if it was a scam then the individual would stop communicating with me, but sending the $20 did not change the individual's attitude or texts. The individual continued to communicate with me, telling me to come to their house at 8301 Spotswood Drive in Summerfield, NC after 4pm on 12/23, to let them know when I was coming, to wear a mask when picking up the puppy because her husband was very concerned about the virus, and even was texting me while I was en-route to pick up the puppy asking if I had brought a crate along for the puppy. I drove nearly 2 hours to the address given. When I arrived at 8301 Spotswood, I went to the house, mask on face and crate in hand, $500 cash in my pocket at exactly 4:30pm as the seller requested and had been agreed upon, to be met by the resident of the home, a very kind elderly woman who was very confused that I wanted to buy a puppy and felt very sorry that she could not help me further. It is clear that her house and address were used as a decoy in this scam. I apologized to the woman and said that I must just have the address wrong. When I got back in my car, I texted the seller asking for a verification of the address because the address I went to was wrong. At this point, I was concerned but hopeful. Because the seller had been texting just shortly before I asked about the address and because they said they were expecting me, when several minutes had passed and they did not reply, I tried to call them. I was greeted by a recorded message that the number I was trying to reach was no longer in service. The intricate detail of the scam and the length of how long they continued it for in exchange for $20 seems extreme, and after the fact, I also noted that there were several vehicles parked along the road near the address I was given of 8301 Spotswood Road. Being that the seller knew where my exact whereabouts would be and the fact that they knew I would have $500 cash on my person, I have since become very grateful that I was not physically harmed or approached by any nefarious individuals in real life and only dealt with this scammer via text. The owner of the home, the nice older woman, did stay outside while I went back to my car, and I had my sister in my car (who was going to help me with the puppy on the drive home), both of which I believe may have kept me safe if there was a more nefarious plot in mind by the scammer. Still, the emotional turmoil for myself and my family is very difficult, more than anything else, and the loss of faith in mankind and right before Christmas.
