I work as a contractor for a design company and my boss received this initial email from the scammer:

"Good day, I am an event organizer and hearing impaired patient. I got your contact details online, I need the service of a ceramicist/sculptors to work on a project for an upcoming workshop, I'll give the idea of what I need to be represented and you can get back to me with the price to get it done, I'll pay your fees up front if you want. Warm regards, Ryan"

My boss didn't have the time to accept the project so he forwarded it to me because I do freelance art. After I showed interest, the scammer sent the following email:

"Thank you for your interest in this project.

The title of the workshop is AGAINST ANIMAL KILLINGS: Cruelty to animals, also called animal abuse, animal neglect or animal cruelty, is the infliction by omission (neglect) or by commission by humans of suffering or harm upon non-human animals.

GOING FORWARD WITH THE WORKSHOP; The material will be used in a lecture and the sole aim of the workshop is to enlighten the more youthful ages and also adults against animal killings, cruelty to animals, also called animal abuse, animal neglect or animal cruelty caused by humans. We are living in the age of technological advancement, and the world is changing. We can’t overemphasize the need to show the more youthful age the significance of better approaches for protecting, divergent approaches to laws concerning animal cruelty occur in different jurisdictions throughout the world. For example, some laws govern methods of killing animals for food, clothing, or other products, and other laws concern the keeping of animals for entertainment, education, research, or pets. There are several conceptual approaches to the issue of cruelty to animals. Therefore, this workshop is vital, and I will make sure that participants are enlightened.

The participants are students between the ages of 16-55 years. These materials in art will be presented to participants to understand the treatment of animals. They say that most animal use itself is unnecessary and a cause of suffering, so the only way to ensure protection for animals is to end their status as property and to ensure that they are never viewed as a substance or as non-living things. The workshop will be in two two phases, this could be in clay sculpture, metal, pottery or cast bronze

We have 2 piece in Phase One to be finished in 7 weeks.

Then, 2 more piece in Phase Two are due for submission before the final event in 14 weeks.

Below is the outline of the scenarios to be prepresented for Phase one:

* ZEBRA FIGURINE

* A RARE SMALL TURQUOISE FIGURE OF A BIXIE

Below is the outline of the scenarios to illustrate for Phase Two:

* AN ARCHAISTIC ELEPHANT-FORM VESSEL

* AN ARCHAISTIC OWL-FORM VESSEL

The budget for the project is $7500 per piece, Absolute: 4 represented works of art. ( Total cost: $30,000)

Kindly get back to me on the proposition and representation above. Additionally, let me know whether the cost per piece is fine with you. If it’s not please get back to me with the price quote and what would be your preferred mode of payment? I'm proposing a certified bank draft, a cashier's check, or bank certified check considering the amount involved. I look forward to reading from you soon.

Warm regards.

Ryan"

After that was a back and forth about project details that gave me the impression that it was real, even though my gut instincts we screaming that it was a scam because it seemed too good to be true, especially because of the budget costs and their evasiveness when asked about specific information like "What is the name of your organization?" or "Do you have a website?"

Against my better judgement, I went ahead with the project and detailed a contract saying I would like half the amount upfront. The check was late and it was for the full amount instead. The day after I deposited it and sent the receipt to the scammer, they sent this email:

"Below is the shipping address:

9011 Mountain Ridge Drive

Suite 100

Austin, Texas 78759

The sponsor has made a humble request that the second phase of the project be halted due to an urgent family emergency. He could have called off the whole project but I was able to convince him that we proceed with phase one and get it completed because of the planning and effort that has been committed. The 2nd phase has therefore been cancelled. We will ensure to meet the deadline for the 1st phase.

Warm regards,

Ryan"

At this point I realized that it was scam and tried to stop the deposit but it was too late and my bank account was frozen pending an investigation. Also, my boss received another scam email with the same wording from a person claiming to be Dylan Curbis <[email protected]> and when asked about their relationship to the other scammer, Ryan Kraft, they each said that they were competitors or colleagues.</[email protected]>
