I work at a Senior Independent Living Community and one of our residents brought this piece of mail to me. He inquired whether or not it was a scam. I called the number on the letter so the resident could hear the scammer. Sure enough the man hung up as soon as he asked my name and I stated I was attorney inquiring on what the process fee was for.

I received in the mail from Old Mutual Financial Incorporated (lottery, resources management and payment verification), a notice which confirms me as the 2nd. prize winner in the second category of the European, African and North America Consumer sweepstake, in conjunction with Departmental Stores. They enclosed a check to me in the amount of $3,650.00 provided to help me pay for the processing fee. The fee is $3,300.00. I matched the first five lucky winning numbers and subsequently won $250,000.00. They noted: We do not need your banking details at anytime and do not disclose your banking details to anyone at all. Payment of the winning prize will be made by a Certified Check, and will be brought to me in person by their special courier company. I am advised to contact my claims agent at an 877 number to start the claim processing and to activate my check. I haven't contacted the agent. I just want to know if this is a scam.
