I received an email offering to compensate me to be a secret shopper at Fry's or Walmart. I completed the initial information and received an email in response. At that time it did not sound like a legitimate secret shopper assignment and I did not accept it. Today I received a Priority 3-Day envelope from Manhattan Beach California containing a letter with instructions on how to complete my secret shopper assignment. The letter contained a check for $2495.74 drawn on a credit union in Texas, Randolph Brooks Federal Credit Union. The letter contains instructions for depositing the check and using it to purchase Walmart gift cards and a $25 money order to the Salvation Army. The instructions describe scratching off the information on the back of the cards and sending pictures to 612-255-7909. After making a "report" I would be given an address to mail the purchased gift cards and cashier's check made out to the Salvation Army.

Not only does this sound like a money laundering scam, but it also would give the scammers access to my bank account information had I chosen to deposit the check.
