I was contacted about an opening at Nuvo USA via email on 10/26/2020. They purported to have job openings for Data Entry and Administrative Assistants. I am looking for an administrative position right now, and I posted my resume at multiple job sites. I believe that is how they got my contact info. I was asked to interview via the Telegram app, and I did so on 10/28/2020. The interview was comprehensive. They asked the same detailed questions as many legitimate interviews. They used the real Nuvo logo on Telegram and email. They used the names of people who work at the real Nuvo. They gave specific details about the job, and after an hour or so, said I was hired. They asked for my name, address, email, and my bank's name but did not ask for other identifying or financial information on Telegram. The hourly rate for the work was high, but not out of the realm of possibility, given my experience and the administrative salaries in my area. They emailed me start paperwork, including an I-9, W-4, direct deposit form, offer letter, and a long, legitimate-looking company Code of Conduct. In the Telegram app, they indicated that they would send me funds to pay for the equipment I would need to do the job. Unfortunately, I did fill out all the start paperwork and send it to them. However, when I received a check from them, I knew it was a scam. The check looked suspicious; it came with a strange letter with no company logo. The letter demanded that I send a copy of the deposit slip when I put the check in the bank. At that point, I put a freeze on my credit with all three bureaus. Today (11/2/2020), according to my "company contact" through the Telegram app, I was supposed to deposit the check, set aside $150 as a "sign-on bonus," and send them a deposit slip. They also asked that I let them know when the funds were available in my account. I closed my bank account. I am usually not an easy person to scam. This scammer was very thorough and convincing, and I am just desperate for a job right now. I should have caught on when they wanted to interview via a messaging app, even though there are a few companies who conduct interviews that way.
