My parents (89 years old) were recently approached by NuQuest Industries about making energy efficiency upgrades to their home. A rep came and crawled around in the attic for a while then told them they could save on energy with some upgrades. He also told them they had asbestos that should be removed. They then provided a quote (attached) for insulation upgrades, asbestos abatement, etc., for a net cost of $19,000. That is almost 10% of their available liquid funds they have left in their retirement accounts. The problems: (1) They are 89 with a limited number of years left to live. It would take decades to recover the money they would spend on these improvements. (2) They have lived in the house since 1964 with no asbestos-related issues. Why disturb it now? How important is it that they mitigate this potential risk when they are 89 years old?! I feel NuQuest is clearly taking advantage of their advanced age. They fortunately asked me about proceeding, but they were seriously considering signing the contract!
