We bought a bogus IT service the previous year. A year later, they billed us for another year, we tried to cancel. Follow-up contact by the computer scammers claimed to offer a refund to my husband who has dementia. They pretended to give a refund and asked my husband to enter a series of numbers on the computer. The scammer claimed to have accidentally provided us a larger refund (about $40K) than was owed because my husband entered the numbers erroneously. They asked him to take the "overpayment" and send it back to them by obtaining an international wire in the amount of $9600. My husband, who does not handle any financials in the family, and who suffers from dementia, took their word for it. The scammers were able to capture our bank accounts information during the process of gaining online access while they supposedly scan our computer for problem areas such as viruses. With access, they were able to manipulate funds between our savings and checking to accrue the $9600 and the $2000 outlay. They also got him to go down to Best Buy to purchase four, $500 gift certificates (=$2K). Finally, they were able to obtain a cash advance of $5,000 from our credit card.
