Type of a scam Rental
I found an apartment listing for a 2BR apartment in Vancouver on Craigslist a few days ago, and replied to the posting. I received a reply back, asking me to communicate with him on a different email address (email correspondence attached). After initial correspondence where I explain I am interested in viewing his unit for rent, he lets me know he is not located in Canada and will be using "global real estate company specialized in property management called NMRK" to manage the rental - and that I should pay them a deposit.
I looked up this company, and as far as I can tell they do not do residential property management. Instead, I found a Reddit thread with several other people who have been served exactly the same story (same story about the landlords whereabouts and his son studying in Australia, it being the first time he's renting a property etc.) for several other rental units across the Lower Mainland, and the other people had also been told NMRK would manage the rental. I want to be clear, I did not pay this person any money - I am reporting this because I know a scam when I see one, and many others (like students) might not be aware of the methods employed by scammers. Hopefully this can help in some small way.
