The incident started on 05th February, 2025. The scammer emailed to my ************ ********** email address using this email, [email protected], and impersonated as Vanessa Abreu from Newland Associates. The email mentioned the company was impressed by my application for the Data Analyst position and arranged an interview via Skype. The Skype calls did not work and the scammer asked me to continue via Skype chat. She asked me 11 interview questions and then offered me a Remote Data Analyst position. She also mentioned via Skype that I will need a printer, an external monitor, some software and also a Newland certified time tracker to commence my training and orientation, also I need the software to get started with work. And then she sent me the Letter of Employment document with Newland Associates letter head via the same email address and asked me to sign and emailed back. So I did. Next day, 06th February, she emailed me a scanned front and back of a check and mentioned the check is from one of company's Affiliate accounts. The amount is USD 1450.00. She asked me to print the check in color, sign the back of the check (ENDORSE HERE) and deposit it via my Chase bank mobile app. So I did. I was under the impression that I needed to act quickly to start the work as soon as possible. So I started buying a color printer, an external monitor and 500 sheets of paper from Amazon with my own money (using my Zolve credit card) while the check was being processed. Then I mentioned I bought the required hardware and she blamed me for not waiting for her. Next day 07th February, she asked me to buy the necessary softwares via Skype, starting with the in-house time tracker software. She asked me to pay USD 500 via Apple Cash to this phone number, ?+1 (717) 315-3849?. As I did not have Apple Cash setup in my Apple Wallet, I was struggling from the beginning. I did even ask her if I could make a payment via Zelle or Venmo. Then I figured out the Apple Cash setup on my iphone 11 and started making a payment to the scammer via Apple Cash using Chase debit card. After the payment was completed, she then asked me another USD 500 payment for Shipping, Database Software and PyTorch software. At that point, my suspicion started on her because I know PyTorch is an open-source library, also why would everything cost USD 500? So I mentioned that PyTorch does not require license and asked her to send me the invoice for the time tracker software. As her response got delayed, I asked her to have a call via Skype and she mentioned she was busy. Then I started communicating with Vanessa Abreu in LinkedIn and she mentioned the employment is a scam. At that point, I knew I was scammed and started contacting Apple Support and then Chase Support (by phone and in person at Evanston Chase branch) and finally filed the case at Chicago Police Department 24th District on the same day, 07th February. The Police R.D number is JJ142281. I also asked the scammer to resend my Letter of Employment via real Vanessa Abreu email address (visible on LinkedIn), [email protected], but the scammer mentioned it would be against the code of conduct and provided me the photo of the ID card of Vanessa Abreu via Skype.
