Rental house offered on Craigslist, with a picture of the home. Once you respond to the add, you are referred to the "owner" of the home. After emailing, the "owner" tells an elaborate, yet believable story about a relocated family that needs a dependable family to rent and maintain their home.

They send you through an application process, even requiring pictures of you and/or your family. This goes on for awhile, and once you have been "approved", you're asked to send a security deposit before the keys will be sent to you. There's no way to legitimize or see inside the home until the money is received. This is explained with more stories, even religious excuses.

When looking up the property on the county assessor site, however, the home is not owned but the individual, and none of the dates match the story.
