I listed a dresser for sale on FB Marketplace. The scammer reached out via FB messenger asking questions about the condition of the item and pickup details. My address was never given for pickup, only general area. Scammer confirmed they wanted to purchase, and requested my Zelle information. I provided, and scammer "allegedly" sent the $150 for the purchase of item. Scammer recieved an error message saying my account needed to be upgraded to a business account to receive funds, so scammer "sent me" an additional $250 for the account upgrade. Throughout the process screenshots of the emails and transactions were shared by both myself and the scammer. I was then instructed in an email from Zelle to return the $250 and provide a screenshot, and then my account would be unlocked and I would receive the $400 (purchase of item + $250). I then received another email saying my account couldn't be verified and I needed to send another $250. I reached out to the person and told them I would not be doing anything until I contacted customer service. Spent 30 minutes attempting to contact Zelle customer service and could never get to a person. Reached out to my bank, Bank of America, and they confirmed no money was deposited into my account, the $250 I sent was gone, and that this was a scam.
